La définition actuelle découle du sens historique; il est difficile de tracer une démarcation claire entre les deux. Les termes français sont tous équivalents du terme anglais mais ne sont pas synonymes entre eux dans bien des cas. Il est donc important de choisir le terme approprié au contexte qui est le sien. «Homestead» convient pour les États-Unis et l'Ouest canadien.
